Largest Reel Hub Drive in Asia-Pacific deployed for Cable Lay between Singapore and Malaysia

One Offshore has been awarded a contract for provision of reel hub drive system rated for 500 metric tonnes onboard a cable lay barge configured to lay power cables. Six power cables packed into three reels 11.3 metres in diameter weighing more than four hundred metric tonnes are to be laid across the Johor Straits between Johor in Malaysia and Singapore.

The reel hub drive system was land-transported alongside the cable lay barge, assembled on the quayside in eight-and-half hours and readied for lifting onto the cable lay barge.

On re-assembling of one of the largest such system in the Pacific-Indo region within a shift, chief executive Steven Seow says “We are pleased our team, working with other teams nominated by our Customer, is able to offer this level of competency and safety that enables our customers to save mobilization time and costs.”

Installation of the 178mm outer diameter cable will be carried out by a partnership involving one of the leading cable manufacturers in North Asia.
